one stone two bird! Scientists convert carbon emissions into usable energy

Recently, a study affiliated with UNIST developed a system that can produce both electricity and hydrogen (H2) and eliminate carbon dioxide (CO2), which is the main cause of global warming.

This breakthrough was made in collaboration between Professor Guntae Kim of the UNIST School of Energy and Chemical Engineering and Professors Jaephil Cho and Meilin Liu of the Georgia Institute of Technology ’s School of Materials Science and Engineering. In this work, the research team proposed a hybrid Na-CO2 system, which can efficiently dissolve CO2 in an aqueous solution through efficient CO2 conversion, operate stably for more than 1,000 hours, and continuously produce electricity and hydrogen.

Professor Kim said that carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology has recently received widespread attention for providing a way to deal with global climate change. The key to this technology is the conversion of chemically stable carbon dioxide molecules into other materials. He added that our new system solves this problem through the carbon dioxide dissolution mechanism.

Most of the carbon dioxide emitted by humans is absorbed by the ocean and converted into acidic substances. The researchers focused their attention on this phenomenon and proposed the idea of dissolving carbon dioxide in water to initiate an electrochemical reaction. If the acidity increases, the number of protons will increase, and the number of protons will increase the ability to attract electrons. If the battery system is based on this phenomenon, then it can generate electricity by removing carbon dioxide.

Schematic diagram of Na-CO 2 mixing system and its reaction mechanism

Their Na-CO2 hybrid system is like a fuel cell, consisting of a cathode (metal sodium), a separator (NASICON) and an anode (catalyst). Unlike other batteries, the catalyst is contained in water and is connected to the cathode through wires. When carbon dioxide is injected into the water, the entire reaction begins, eliminating carbon dioxide, producing electricity and hydrogen. At this time, the conversion efficiency of CO2 is as high as 50%.

This hybrid Na-CO2 battery uses efficient CCUS technology, which can not only use carbon dioxide as a source of electrical energy, but also produce clean energy hydrogen. In particular, the system exhibits strong stability and can work continuously for more than 1,000 hours without damaging the electrodes. The system can remove carbon dioxide by inducing spontaneous chemical reactions.

Professor Kim said that this research will bring more derivative research. When the electrolyte, separator, system design and electrocatalyst are improved, it will be able to produce hydrogen and electricity more efficiently.
