U.S. Develops Artificial Blood to Be Used in Battlefields for 5 Years

The U.S. Pentagon’s scientific research institution, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, started this research project called “blood grafting” in 2008.

According to the "Daily Mail" report, American scientists have successfully developed artificial blood and will be used to treat wounded soldiers on the battlefield within five years.

According to reports, this type of artificial blood is made using transgenic technology and uses machines to simulate the hematopoietic process of human bone marrow to produce a large amount of red blood cells from umbilical cord cells. An umbilical cord can eventually be converted to about 20 units of usable blood, and on the battlefield, on average, each wounded soldier needs 6 units of blood for treatment. The researchers said that artificial blood and red blood cells in healthy human circulation are exactly the same.

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a research institute affiliated with the Pentagon, began this research project called "blood grafting" in 2008. Arteriocyte, the US company responsible for this project, has sent the first O-negative human blood samples to the US Food and Drug Administration for identification.

Scientists will conduct human trials on human blood after 2013 and use it on the battlefield within five years. All human blood types are O-negative and can be used to treat any blood group.

A person in charge of Arteriocyte said that due to insufficient sources and long transportation time, the battlefield has always faced problems such as scarcity of blood and blood contamination. If artificial blood is approved for application, it will revolutionize the treatment of wounded in the field.

In the United States, injuries and illnesses on the battlefield in Iraq have been faced with problems such as scarcity of blood and blood contamination on the battlefield due to inadequate sources and long transportation times.
