New York University researchers create energy-saving switches that do not require current

According to foreign media SlashGear, New York University researchers announced a discovery that can use energy-saving switches that do not require current to control the magnetic circuit. This type of control switch currently requires electricity and generates heat and energy losses, making them expensive to operate. Especially in large data centers and server farms, the cost is particularly high.

The technology invented by New York University researchers is called a voltage-controlled topological spin switch (vTOPSS), which requires only an electric field instead of a current to switch between two Boolean logic states. The team devised a method that uses topological insulators without charge transfer rotation. This is a material with an insulating interior, but the exterior can support the flow of electrons on its surface. This process significantly reduces the heat generated and the energy used.

Team member Shaloo Rakheja said that vTOPSS increases the possibility of functional and circuit design because it integrates logic and non-volatile memory. Rakheja used an analogy to explain how the team ’s new equipment compares to existing technology.

"Imagine if you prepare a recipe, as long as you need an ingredient, you have to enter another room and then go back to the kitchen to add it," she said. "When computing hardware needs to be calculated and the parts needed to store it are not well integrated, the efficiency is much lower."

The team said that vTOPPS will reduce the dependence on cloud memory, so it is possible to make computing more secure, because it will be more difficult for hackers to gain access to system hardware. The next steps planned by the team include additional optimizations at the material and design levels to increase the switching speed. The team also plans to develop the prototype they designed.
