US DARPA Successfully Tested Gigapixel Cameras [Full Text]

The camera is a gigapixel camera developed by the DARPA Advanced Wide Field of View Image Reproduction and Utilization (AWARE) project. Previously, DARPA successfully tested 1.4 and 0.96 Gigapixel resolution at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington State. The camera contains 100 to 150 miniature cameras and a spherical eyepiece. The inherent aberration correction and focus within these cameras allow extremely high resolution shots with a smaller system volume and lower distortion than conventional wide field lens systems. .

The DARPA project hopes to develop a camera with a resolution of up to 10 to 50 gigapixel that is more visible than the naked eye. The AWARE project camera design simulates a parallel processor supercomputer and uses a parallel multi-stage micro camera structure to form a wide-field panoramic image.

In addition, the AWARE project is also developing new methods and advanced capabilities to support imaging of various different DOD tasks.
