(Participant correspondent Song Qiongfang correspondent Shi Yun) At the launching ceremony of the 2nd International Plant Day and Agricultural Biotechnology Science Communication Platform held recently in Shanghai, Academician Xu Zhihong, former President of Peking University and Academician Chen Xiaoya, President of Shanghai Institutes for Life Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences Professor Lu Baorong, Director of the Department of Ecology and Evolution Biology of Fudan University, and Zhu Xi, a researcher of the Agricultural Biotechnology Science Communication Platform, talked with more than 300 citizens and media people about GM technology and safety evaluation. Experts at the meeting said that there is no need to talk about the discoloration of genetically modified foods.
According to the data provided by ISAAA, as of 2011, a total of 29 countries in the world planted 2.4 billion mu of genetically modified crops. Zhu Xi introduced that, in China, large-scale cultivation of genetically modified crops is only cotton, and its cultivation area accounts for about two-thirds of the country's total cotton planting area. “The only genetically modified foods that are sold directly on the food market are soybean oil, rapeseed oil, and papaya. Little tomatoes, cucumbers, and purple corn are not genetically modified foods,†Zhu Xi said. Transgenic technology has been used in medicine and other fields for many years. For example, Insulin gene is transferred to E. coli, and the produced synthetic insulin is an authentic genetically modified product. Both Xu Zhihong and Chen Xiaoya expressed that GM technology is one of the most effective means to solve global food security in the future.
In 2012, news reports on Hunan primary school students being used as a golden rice test once again aroused the public's voice of GM foods. Zhu Xi said: “The safety of the golden rice itself is not a problem. The problem with this experiment is that the scientists conducting the experiment evade the ethical review, the legal process and entry procedures for the food safety experiment, and do not respect the parents’ right to know. So we should be accountable for the program, not the product."
It is also understood that Yuan Longping, the “father of hybrid rice†in China, is cautious about genetically modified foods. He suggested recruiting young volunteers to conduct clinical trials. "They ate nothing and they have no problems with children born in the future. This shows that there is no problem."
