The research team of the Korea Science and Technology Research Institute has successfully developed a type AA graphite with semiconductor properties. Graphite is formed by stacking graphene layers one by one. According to the stacking method, it can be divided into AA graphite and AB graphite. AA graphite does not exist in nature because of its unstable energy.
The research team re-combined the graphene powder under heat treatment under conditions and recombined the powder in a manner similar to AA. The new graphite was named AA graphite. The above results have been confirmed by X-ray and high-resolution microscope analysis. Until now, it has been considered that AB graphite is the only way to construct graphite. This study is equivalent to the development of a new type of graphite.
Although AA graphite is not as stable as AB graphite, the use of this single crystal form of graphite makes it possible to produce a highly flexible, paper-thin, highly elastic carbon material that differs from general graphite in that it has the characteristics of a semiconductor. At present, the research results have been published in the online version of Scientific Reports, an internationally renowned scientific journal.
