According to a report by the Russian Indicator and the Russian Science Foundation on May 6, Russian researchers have proposed a new method by which waste from coal power plants can be recovered. The developed method can not only remove waste materials, but also be used in the aluminum industry. Related research was published in the journal "Metal".
About 15% of Russia ’s electricity comes from coal-fired power plants. When such power plants generate heat and electricity, coal will not be completely burned, and the amount of unburned substances can reach 40% of the initial amount, which results in Russia generating about 20 million tons of waste each year. At the same time, Russia ’s disposal of waste is only 8 %. The “Energy Strategy†approved by the Government of the Russian Federation in April 2020 plans to treat such waste by 15% by 2024 and 50% by 2035. This new method promises to extract useful metals from waste materials, especially aluminum.
Through a project funded by the Presidential Research Program of the Russian Science Foundation, Russian researchers compared the acid extraction and acid-alkali extraction of alumina from the ash of the Omsk No. 4 thermal power plant. Using hydrochloric acid to extract alumina from furnace ash, the final product may contain large amounts of chlorine impurities. The alumina obtained by the acid method usually contains up to 0.15% of chlorine. To avoid this situation, the researchers decided to improve the alumina recovery method. With the new method, the researchers were able to reduce its content dozens of times (to 0.004%).
According to the project leader and researcher Dmitry Valev of the Aabaykov Metallurgical Materials Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, "These plants produce tens of millions of tons of ash each year, and these ash are not yet available. Industrial treatment. We used an alkaline solution and aluminum hydroxide particles from the Ural Aluminum Plant to obtain alumina, which allows us to produce high-quality alumina while reducing the chlorine content. In the future, this method will enable furnace ash extraction The cost of alumina is reduced by 15% to 20% ".
