According to a recent report by NASA's official website, NASA is working with the University of Miami to develop a new type of solid-state battery that is small and space-saving and can be used on micro satellites such as CubeSats. The researchers said that the new battery is expected to completely change the way of handling small loads.
The prototype of this battery was developed by Luke Roberson, chief researcher of the Discovery Research and Technology Council of the NASA Kennedy Space Center, and Ryan Cahillon, a composite expert at the University of Miami; the chemical properties and structure of the battery were developed by the University of Miami Mechanics and Aviation. Zhou Yuyang, an associate professor of aerospace engineering, is responsible for research and development.
The battery is small in size and only 2mm to 3mm thick, making it ideal for use with micro satellites including CubeSats. Robson explained that for CubeSat, which does not yet have a large bread machine, space is of the utmost importance, and the new battery takes up only one-third of the existing battery, thus saving a lot of space for researchers to do. More scientific research.
Robson said that the battery can also be applied to other fields. He said: "This technology can be used in satellite truss structures and on the International Space Station. Commercial applications may include automotive frame or desktop battery chargers."
In addition, if such batteries can be added to a house or wall during the building process, they will become a supplemental or alternative energy source to meet households' electricity demand during peak periods.
If a suitable structural element is used, the new battery can achieve anti-collision, moisture-proof, flame-proof performance. The research team hopes that the technology can be a safe and effective energy storage method, widely used in many fields, and it is particularly hopeful that it can improve the performance of the aerospace system and promote the development of related industries.
