New memory material does not need electricity to save data

Multitasking is costly: Computers need to consume large amounts of power to track data that is not stored on hard disks. Americans spend about $6 billion a year to maintain data stored in memory. Now, scientists have reported in Nature that they have discovered a new type of memory material that can permanently store data without continuous power supply.

The newly discovered material is an organic crystalline compound that consists of inexpensive components. It is also a ferroelectric and can work at room temperature.
