According to information, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) has newly invented a carbon fiber heat-resistant ceramic tile, which is expected to solve the problem of the heat-resistant ceramic tile of the United States Space Shuttle falling off.
Carbon-fibre-reinforced high-temperature ceramic tiles are an important component to ensure the flight safety of the space shuttle. More than 25,000 pieces of heat-resistant ceramic tiles are on the recently discovered US space shuttle Discovery. Ceramic tiles undergo high-temperature friction when they enter the atmosphere, and large-scale shedding occurs. This is an important cause of the tragedy caused by accidents and even aircraft crashes. NASA has been working hard to improve the performance of heat-resistant ceramic tiles, but no breakthroughs have been made so far.
The German Aerospace Center uses a new manufacturing process that allows the production of carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide ceramic tiles that can withstand repeated temperatures of up to 1700 degrees Celsius, and are highly resistant to impact and chemicals. Another outstanding advantage of the new ceramic tile is that it is stable under large dimensions without cracks. The new ceramic tile was used for the first time on the Soyuz spacecraft rocket launched by Russia in mid-June and achieved satisfactory results.
At present, NASA is very interested in this new type of ceramic tile, and has conducted tests on the newly developed "X-38" spacecraft in the United States. This new type of carbon fiber reinforced ceramics has also been favored by some automakers and can be used to manufacture high temperature resistant ceramic brake pads in braking systems.
