Gossell said: "We should be the first team to produce a high-speed and powerful plasma jet engine on the ground. Now we can produce a plasma jet that can reach a high speed of 20 kilometers per second."
However, this study has a long way to go before it is put into practical use. First, the team’s current experimental engine is only 8 centimeters long. To be an effective thrust for the aircraft, at least 10,000 must be installed, which is obviously not practical. However, it is impractical to use it as a high-altitude airship or satellite. In fact, in 2005 scientists used an early plasma engine to install a 7.5-meter-long airship that achieved a performance of 1 meter per second.
The team believes that the future small-scale nuclear fusion reactor can provide more powerful power and pulse, that is, the future plasma jet will be a nuclear-powered aircraft. At present, the research team of Loma in the United States, Russia, and China are all engaged in research on small-scale plasma nuclear fusion reactors. Loma claims that their nuclear fusion reactor is as big as a car.
