China's metallurgical coal imports increased by 17% in the first quarter of 2012

In the first quarter of 2012, China's metallurgical coal imports increased by 17% month-on-month, while import growth was mainly from supply growth in Australia and Mongolia. For the whole year of 2012, China's metallurgical coal imports are expected to increase by 15% to 53 million tons, partly due to steel mills rebuilding their inventory, and on the other hand, China's crude steel production will continue to grow in 2012. In 2013, China's metallurgical coal imports will further increase by 6% to 56 million tons. China's metallurgical coal consumption exceeds domestic production.

In 2012, India's metallurgical coal imports are expected to increase by 6% year-on-year to 34 million tons. In 2013, India's metallurgical coal imports continued to increase by 6% to 36 million tons. In 2012-2013, the EU's metallurgical coal imports will remain unchanged from 2011, stabilizing at 46 million tons. The stagnation of EU metallurgical coal imports during 2012-2013 was mainly due to the lack of growth in local crude steel production.
