ARM architecture captures 10% of PCs next year

US investment bank Morgan Stanley recently released a research report that processors based on the ARM architecture will gain approximately 10% of the PC market in 2013, directly eroding the market demand for traditional Intel/AMD x86 processors.

Prior to this, market research firm IDC predicted that global PC shipments will reach 39 million units (including tablet PCs) next year, of which the ARM platform's share is 3.5%. Obviously, Morgan Stanley's confidence in ARM is much higher.

Morgan Stanley recently found in a survey of 30 PC manufacturers that 40% said they would at least try to develop systems based on the ARM architecture within the next two years, including the use of NVIDIA and Texas Instruments processors, especially Acer and Compal. May go faster.

However, since Microsoft's Windows 8 will officially support the ARM architecture, and the system will not be released until mid-year next year, the popularity of ARM processors in PCs will not be too fast, at least initially.

The report said: "We believe that PC makers still generally believe that there is a lot of uncertainty in the conversion to ARM... Consumer acceptance, software compatibility issues, ARM processor readiness, etc. will all serve as a roadblock." Can not stimulate the market demand of ARM PC very well, will face greater profit pressure.

The report also pointed out that the quad-core and 28nm process will become the key drivers of ARM's plundering the PC market.

Morgan Stanley also believes that TSMC will become the biggest winner in the rise of ARM, because most of these future processors will use its 28nm or even 20nm process. If ARM can really gain a 10% share, it would mean to bring TSMC with annual revenue of 660 million US dollars.
